What is this thing and who beat it with an ugly stick? Toyota is starting to make Ssangyong look like designers of attractive vehicles.

I don’t know what Toyota are doing these days.
Aygo
Yaris
The Auris looks pretty good
the Verso isn’t bad either
Thankfully we don’t and I hope we won’t be getting the Sienna.

I tend to agree with your views on these four models, although I have a strong aversion to reversed C/D pillars on modern cars.
I like this this Toyota Wish (at least what I can see of it):
A quick Google image search shows styling a lot like my Mazda5, so perhaps that’s why I like it so much.

The reversed C pillar seems to be quite common on hatchbacks where the roof of the tailgate has been pushed back from the car whilst not being an estate.
Vauxhall/Opel/Holden Astra.
It does create more of a bright and more airy space in the rear though.
Whilst the Toyota Wish looks okay, the Toyota Auris Tourer, Avensis and Avensis Tourer look great.

I would tend to disagree about making a more airy space as it actually enlarges the C/D pillar instead of following the contour of the roofline, thus reducing the amount of glass on the side.
The worst offender in the D-pillar wars has to be the Camry wagon:
Eeeeeewwwww. Just wrong.

This ssangyong isn’t really ugly, it’s not great but it’s not ugly

Would be nice if they brought the last-gen Wish over to the US.

It creates a larger D pillar overall but with the light coming in over the occupants shoulder it gives the illusion of airy which is what I should of said better earlier.
That D pillar just doesn’t look right.

That looks like a rebadged Vauxhall Mokka.
The other SsangYongs do look hideous though.
The Actyon.
Actyon Sports.
The Rodius.

Sienta? More like Placenta! I’ll see myself out.

They all had to start somewhere.

True but Ssang Yong looks to of gone backwards from the Musso and Korando (Rexton wasn’t bad) to the Actyon. The current Korando looks like a Mokka while the Tovoli looks like a Mokka that’s had some extensive work from Mahindra.

Honestly, from the small picture on the front page, I thought it was a DS3....:P

“They say our cars are boring. We need a car that’s not boring!!”
...and they don't seem to realize you can have a car that isn't boring without it being hideous. Is what I'm guessing.

I suspect it’s also a rigidity thing. By triangulating that section they can get more strength without having to use exotic blends of steel.

Everything outside of the FRS and some of their Lexus stuff is just plain ugly. Even the Lexus stuff is “pretty to some, awfully ugly to others”. I can’t think of anything in the Toyota (USDM) that I actually like. Maybe the Taco?
But even that they sort of fudged up.

I like it. I’d order a different color but it’s interesting

Did Toyota recently hire Nissan's design team? Those just scream Nissan to me for some reason.
